F1000Research is an innovative open science publishing platform for life scientists and clinicians, offering immediate Open Access publication, transparent post-publication peer review and full data deposition and sharing. We are seeking an enthusiastic, well-organised individual with a good eye for detail to join our team as a Production Assistant to help manage the article production process from the accepted author manuscript through to the final article across our open research platforms (, including our publishing platforms for Wellcome and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The role will involve proofing articles before publication, editing of XML and images and monitoring third-party suppliers for speed and quality. It will also involve working closely with authors to ensure the production process is fast, accurate and professional, and working closely with the wider editorial team to ensure a smooth process throughout for the authors.

You will need a degree or equivalent, be very detail-oriented, have excellent communication skills (both oral and written), and have an interest in publishing. The successful individual will be highly organised and deadline-driven, be customer service-oriented and enjoy interacting with people. You need to be highly computer literate and be able to pick up new computer software skills quickly, although previous knowledge of XML is not necessary. A science background would be an advantage, but not a necessity.

Production Assistant Duties:

  • Manage a proportion of the articles across the F1000 publishing platforms through the production process from accepted author manuscript through to the published article in a variety of publication formats.
  • Work closely with third-party suppliers to monitor speed and quality of output and provide regular feedback to the Production Manager and the supplier as appropriate.
  • Work closely with authors to ensure the production process is fast, accurate and professional, keeping them informed about the status of the publication of their article, and answering queries by e-mail and phone.
  • Monitor image file quality and conduct basic figure manipulations when necessary.
  • Close team work, especially with the Managing Editor and the editorial teams to ensure a smooth transfer of articles between teams.
  • Suggest improvements to the editorial management tools, working with development on the specifications and testing new tools to be used by Production.

Production Assistant Requirements:

  • Graduate or equivalent
  • Highly computer literate and able to pick up new software skills quickly
